Lazy “YOK”

Underground Railroad traveled south into Mexico, too. The brilliant Everett L. Fly has been unearthing treasured stories and history about his hometown San Antonio and other parts of Texas. For my small role working on his project, I received this unexpected gift.

Registered on November 18, 1875 by Jane Warren, residing in Bexar County. Hers is the only brand claimed by an African American woman in the county before 1915. Jane (b.1825), a former slave, owned 101 acres near the intersection of Higgins Road and Uhr Lane. She donated land for a school and cemetery. She was the matriarch of the Hockley-Freeman-Clay family.
